YOU DON'T SAY................

Hello again everyone.

Sorry for the infrequency of postings in recent times, but I've either been putting in the hours in the office or been involved in social events with many of my new colleagues - mainly out on the golf courses of Greater Toronto or at barbecues as everyone takes advantage of the incredibly hot weather.

Just a couple of techy points to clear up in response to comments left at earlier posts.

The reason for many of the recent downloads being winamp files as opposed to mp3s is all down to the fact I'm having to use a laptop provided by my employer to keep things going on TVV over the coming months. Back home, I've a programme on my home PC that converts songs/files into the mp3 format, but I'm unable to load that onto the laptop. So...most songs will be in the cumbersome format. But I will return back to mp3s in the long-run. I hope its not proving too annoying for any of you.

It will still be a couple of weeks before I'm back within my allowable download space with fileden, and so I am having to use other file servers. I'm quite happy with the service provided by divi, but as I'm always open to suggestions, I'm going to have a go today with sharebee as suggested by papayasf.

For the duration of my stay in Toronto, I'm living on the 11th Floor of a relatively new complex a little bit out of town. It's ideal in many ways, for I'm a non-driver and I've got everything I need on my doorstep such as a great transport hub, a supermarket, a shopping mall and a clutch of bars and restaurants. There's even a Scottish style fish and chip shop within walking distance...

But living in a skyscraper/tower block is a whole new experience for me. For one thing, the only time you get to meet anyone from the block is when you are in the lift/elevator. Even then, its a cursory 'good morning', 'good evening' and if you're lucky you might get a 'thank you.'

Having said that, it's probably likely that everyone else gets on like a house on fire and they invite one another round of an evening for wine, canapes and the chance to listen to the latest MOR nonsense that seems to dominate many of the airwaves over here. They are probably pleased to quietly ignore the morose but smartly dressed Scotsman with the briefcase...

All of which leads me to shoving up a couple of beautifully crafted pieces of English pop that reflect on your locality and the attitudes of those who live alongside you:-

mp3 : XTC - Respectable Street

mp3 : Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia

Not sure if I'll manage another posting before the weekend, but I just want to take the opportunity to wish Ed and the soon to be Mrs 17 Seconds all the best with the wedding this Saturday. I'll raise a quiet toast to you both when I'm at the Maximo Park gig....

hope your enjoying Toronto. As the rest of Canada knows - Torontonians are known for beinging the cold Canadians. I may live here, but I don't think of myself as a Torontonian .. me I'm a Northener .. don't ask, I think its like living in London, but being from Glasglow.
Don't mind the winamp, I enjoy the music. Is it IT that is the problem with install or do you need a app.
Enjoy the weather. Are you staying till winter?

Haha. And Americans think we're SO NICE! But yeah, Toronto can be a bit chilly sometimes.

If you're talking about radio, make sure you check out the CBC, 99.1fm where you are. Saturday afternoons, 1pm: "Definitely Not The Opera"... I think you would like that. And Sook Yin Lee is a wicked good host.

Also, Alan Cross' Ongoing History of New Music is on Sundays at 7pm. 102.1fm

Again, welcome to Canadia. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your stay here more enjoyable. :)

Aw, thank you from us both. There's only two days to go, I'm very nervous but very excited! Enjoy Maximo Park.

Welcome to Toronto!
Thanks for posting the tunes!

You might find John Sakamoto's weekly colum in the Saturday Star newspaper of interest to you(also available online).

I'd be curious to hear your opinions of the nominees for the Polaris music prize.

Sorry to hear your apartment comarades are so insular. I'm surprised your accent hasn't been the start of many a conversation. My mum (from Kirkcaldy) gets asked about her accent all the time thanks to Mike Myers and his 'if it's not scottish it's crap' comedy routine.

Welcome to Toronto. Let me know if you ever get down to the beach. We'll show you around. Toronot, and Lake Ontario is nowhere near as beautiful as Vancouver (fil) but we do what we can. CBC Radio 2 on Sunday afternoon also plays a wide range of great and eclectic music.

I need to clear one thing up.....everyone at my place of employment is making me feel rght at home - so much so that I've hardly had a minute's spare to time since I got here. It's just the weirdness of living in a tower block where unless you go down to the gym/swimming pool (ha!!) or put your name down for the bridge club on Tuesday nights in the communal area in the basement, you're unlikely to meet anyone.

Toronto itself is fine - and I'm here till October 31. Big plus was finding Soundscapes record shop so I was able to pick up some new CDs by Interpol and St Vincent to listen (I feared I would need to go to HMV), while the girl in the shop told me how to beat keep an eye on upcoming gigs.

FiL.....I would so love to get across to Vancouver (and to Saskatchwan to meet Mentok and Library Mama), but its very unlikely. I'm doing 6 or even 7 days a week just now....

But thanks guys for all your help, hints and tips....

As I say, I'm here for a while yet, so maybe those of us living here could get together in a downtown bar...

Don't know if you were aware of it but the XTC page on MySpace carries an excellent series of interviews with Andy Partridge where he will chew over a song in the XTC back catalogue at great length.

The interviews are invariably as witty and incisive as the best XTC songs.

A partial rundown of the songs discussed - with links - can be accessed here.

I especially love the quote from when he's discussing 'Respectable Street',
