BACK TO BASICS WEEK - THURSDAY

Another great non-hit single from Scotland's national bard.

This dates from 1989, when his records were shamefully selling to no-one but hardcore fans. The toucan on the sleeve is an Edwyn Collins drawing. The single can also be found on Hope & Despair, one of the great lost albums of the 80s.

mp3 : Edwyn Collins - Coffee Table Song
mp3 : Edwyn Collins - Judas In Blue Jeans
mp3 : Edwyn Collins - Out There

Judas In Blue Jeans is another example of Edwyn's caustic wit and sarcasm about life at a time when so many inferior musicians were enjoying chart success as his own career floundered. Out There is a short instrumental, one that is crying out for some sort of vocal from the mighty Paul Quinn, unavailable on anything other than this 12" single.

Happy Listening.

Probably said it before that Hope And Despair was one of the first cds I bought. I bought 3, All Mod Cons, Patti Smith's Horses and Edwyn.

Meanwhile, did you see the news about Lux Interior?

That's an impressive choice of initial CDS. Mine were all of The Smiths albums...so I'm in the fortunate position of my CDs being on Rough Trade and not wea (I know....musical snobbery).

Didnt know about poor old Lux till I read read your comment and then went googling...Real shame.

I guess t'internet will be full of appropraite tributes.

For a while I didn't buy anything 'throwaway' on CD. I was still buying LPs and cassettes; and because of the price difference for a while if I was taking a chance I'd buy the tape.

I wanted my CD collection to only be music that I thought I would still like years later! I didn't want to have to hide 'embarrassing' albums at the back....Stupid really...

Ah, good stuff! I had this 12" on top of my USB turntable to copy "Out There", so thanks for saving me the trouble. "Judas in Blue Jeans" is also on the CD single,"50 Shades of Blue", along with "Kindred Spirit" and "Just Call Her Name", which I'm sure you have already. If not, let me know.

First CD: "Cake" by Trashcan Sinatras (or Trash Can Sinatras, back then).

I think Judas in blue jeans was a dig at David bowie (it was about th etime of the "Blue Jean" single and awful album that was "Tonight")
I cant quite remember the line but it goes somethign like you cant even cut it as a middle aged swinger
On a sep note does anyone know if Gorgeous George is about anyone in particular ... over tiem I've built up bizarre theories that it was a song about Boy George wanting Edwyn to produce an lp!!

Hi FoRW

This might be who it's about:-

But I'd hate to think so as his already rampant ego would be unbearable.

Dave C

50 Shades of Blue was the first Edwyn single that was released on CD. I didnt buy much in the way of CD singles in those days.

I only have it on 7"....

So, I dont own 'Just Call Her Name' or 'Kindred Spirit'.

I do have the extra track on the 12" single which was Edwyn's take on 'Aint That Always The Way' if you're looking for that in return....

Bit of a panic there - an Edwyn track I've never heard (even if it is an instrumental)yes yes yes.

But what's this - 'user out of bandwidth'. Desolate I was.

Thankfully it's all working this morning. Thanks indeed JC.
