I'll make no apologies for this, but Belle & Sebastian are likely to feature quite a few times as this series unfolds in the weeks and months ahead.I'm really not sure which of their many singles/EPs is really my personal favourite as it depends largely on my mood. When I did my rundown of my all-time favourite singles back in 2008 it was the very failure to single out (if you'll pardon the pun) one 45 by B&S that stopped me finding a place for them in the rundown.
But...... if I was forced by torture to choose one single then it would be the one that sounded so different from anything else they had done up until the point when Legal Man was released in May 2000. And for being the song that finally got them on Top Of The Pops:-
mp3 : Belle & Sebastian - Legal Man
mp3 : Belle & Sebastian - Judy Is A Dickslap
mp3 : Belle & Sebastian - Winter Wooskie
I was at a clubnight last Saturday night and saw with my own eyes that Stuart Murdoch still dances in that same distinctive and stylish way.
Oh and there's an obscure link to this song coming along tomorrow.....

Excellent track but sometimes I find them a little lightweight. All that tweeness gets on my nerves.
I'm with Drew on this, some great moments in their music, but too much is like eating too much cake.
Meanwhile they hold the title of the quietest live band I've ever seen. Conversations in the crowd were louder.
Any chance you could link to that 'all-time favourite singles' post? I did a search but it didnt show up. Thanks!
This is one of the few B and S tracks of I like. I blogged it myself earlier in the year, after hearing it as part of a Captain Sensible DJ set
He did a post-gig DJ session in New York, and uploaded the set to his myspace blog
Judy Is A Dickslap...
That made me giggle like a little girl.
Re the all time favourite singles....it was a feature on my all time Top 45 that took months to read.
It all started with this on 20th March 2008
http://thevinylvillain.blogspot.com/2008/03/45-45s-at-45-concept.html
And then you'll have to trawl through all sorts of postings between then and 18th June 2008.
Love B&S... really enjoying SM's God Help The Girl album too (including the spoken word b-side Howard Jones Is My Mozart - track it down if you haven't heard it!)
I really like B and S and know what you mean re picking a single - so many of their best stuff only appears on the lps. Still this one is a surprise as first choice good as it is , i suppose for the very reason you chose it ie it sounds different to their norm
Great single...still think 'this is just a modern rock song' is my favourite single of theirs, though...
Fantastic track. For what it's worth, I think when they are on form there's few who can beat them, but they seem hampered by inconsistency and lack of focus. But come on, this and The Boy With The Arab Strap (and loads of others) - amazing.
Brilliant.
