Back in November 1981 when this promo was unleashed on the world, I was as skinny as these boys from Edinburgh. To look at me now, you'd never think it.Fire Engines have been a huge influence on so many bands over the past 30 years, and frontman Davey Henderson has also been part of many other great bands such as Win and Nectarine No.9. But there's just something particularly primal and wonderful about the really early releases that were so out of place with the slick vocals and production often associated with the era:-
mp3 : Fire Engines - Big Gold Dream
mp3 : Fire Engines - Sympathetic Anaesthetic
mp3 : Fire Engines - New Thing In Cartons
More jock'n'roll nostalgia tomorrow.

And will there be more nipples tomorrow?
Hi mate,
Off topic JC..Stevie here in Sydney... lost son of EK...I've read a bit about Frightened Rabbit on Song By Toad and also on here. Saw them tonight down here supporting Echo and the Bunnymen. Very, very good I thought if a wee bit too earnest. Felt like they could have loosened up a bit but they got a great reception and really rocked the place. As did McCulloch. The voice is still quality. All in all a great night. I will now investigate FR's output as I hadn't really heard their stuff until I got it live tonight.
Candyskins were among the Scottish bands whose vinyl I hunted down, loved, and then played for my friends who thought I was insane. When I played them the JAMC 7" of 'Upside Down' I thought they'd try to have me committed. But I don't get why Candyskins never caught on -- they were catchy, intelligent and danceable. I wondered what became of them but I guess the frontman has been plodding on all the while.
Good to read the post from Stevie -- there's a big festival out here in California called Coachella and Echo and FRabbits are both playing it. I always thought Bono was the poor man's McCullough,
Brilliant! Thanks for posting these videos. 30 years on and I'm still no nearer to understanding the lyrics of Big Gold Dream.
Fire Engines were one of those bands, along with OJ and Josef K that I used to put on every mix tape I made for friends back in the 80's - drove more than a few of them mad! Henderson is one those voices of the era for me!
