THE SMITHS ON BRITISH TELLY (Part 25a)
I mentioned last week of how The Tube on 5 July 1986 was the way the world became acquainted with Panic.
By the the single was released the bans were well into a long tour of North America and so it was impossible for the band to appear in any UK telly studios to do any promotional appearances and so there was a reliance on using a promotional film made by Derek Jarman.
However, the BBC felt the footage wasn't suitable for the average Top Of The Pops viewer and so, for the show on 7 August the Jarman material was merged with superimposed video stock of the band miming to Panic at a soundcheck:-
Here's this week's covers:-
mp3 : Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - Panic
mp3 : Billy Bragg - Panic (live)
Billy's crazy version completes with a wonderful rant beforehand.
