AN UNJUSTIFIED FLOP (Part 2)

I did the first part of this series away back in April and featured The Young Knives.  It wasn't that I forgot about it....

OK, I'm telling lies.  I did forget about it.  But it seems appropriate to resurrect it for this #81 flop from 1984:-

mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Jacob's Ladder

A band who released many a wonderful bit of plastic in that decade and yet popstardom eluded them.  This was the closest they got to what could best be described as a bona-fide hit.  And it's a joyful ditty and the act of marriage that musn't at all be confused with the following songs with the same title:-

a 1980 song by Rush
a 1986 song by Huey Lewis and the News
a 1988 song by Bruce Hornsby and the Range
a 1996 song by Mark Wills
a 2000 song by Jane Siberry
a 2002 song by Chumbawamba
a 2002 song by Converge
a 2002 song by Dreadlock Pussy
a 2005 song by Patrick Wolf
a 2006 song by Fucked Up
a 2006 song by Chimp Spanner
a 2009 song by Mumford & Sons

The 12" contained, as the sticker on the sleeve indicates, 5 tracks and a poster.  Here's the other tracks, all of which are worth a few minutes of your time....there's an awful lot of guitar playing that wouldn't sound out of place on stuff by The Smiths...the instrumental Andiamo has bits that remind me loads of Girl Afraid..

mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Andiamo
mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Le Boom Boom
mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Yo Ho Ho
mp3 : The Monochrome Set - Starry Nowhere

Happy Listening.

Hi JC,
here's your Italian thief...

This record moves me to write a multiple comment.

1) Great to see this gorgeous sleeve: I remember that 28 years ago I saw it in an Italian magazine, in the singles reviews section, and I thought it was a great sleeve and the review told nice things about Monochrome Set and their music. But I only bought one of their used Cds last year at a record fair...
Maybe you already know: Andiamo it's Italian for Let's go.

2) I know I'm late, but I'd like to join the celebrations for TVV 6th birthday, and for dick van dyke 50th. I was delighted a few weeks ago to receive comments from both of you in my blog!

3) And now the annoying part of the comment: in your impressive list of songs with this same title, there's one missing that's very important. I know it's not your cup of tea, but Bruce Springsteen did a version of the traditional folk song in his We shall overcome: The Seeger Sessions, in 2006.

4) A bit of self-promotion (even if nobody can understand...) for my series of 45 45s at 45 (and one more thank you for this and all the rest!).
Now we are at n° 29, walking in the glory of the Nineties.

Andiamo to sleep...
Goodnight

Unjustified flop just about sums up the Monochrome Set sadly.
A favourite moment of mine from The Tube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1gMbe7pwRo
But there's no excuse for the reference to M&Sons. Unlike Brooce, no-one would have missed them.
