AN UNJUSTIFIED FLOP (Part 3)
Reaching #85 in the Billboard Charts with only your third single is a very fine achievement....but the rest of the world showed little interest in this single from May 1984:-
mp3 : R.E.M. - So. Central Rain
That's Michael Stipe himself pictured on the sleeve. He's changed a wee bit since then.
Wiki inform the world that the band performed the song on Late Night With David Letterman in 1983 before it even had a title in what was their first ever national television appearance. I've had a hunt for it:-
Such clips make this whole damn interwebby thing all worthwhile
The B-side of the 7" is listed as one track when in fact it is two pieces of music:-
mp3 : R.E.M. - Walter's Theme/King Of The Road
The latter being a jammed and drunken version cover of the song made famous by Roger Miller and a karaoke favourite of many even today almost 50 years later.
Happy Listening.

What a brilliant clip! Good find.
Magical what more can one say!
After Radio Free Europe, THIS is the track I always go back to from REM. It's the template of the majority of their career.
Yep, one of my fave REM songs.
Nice hair, Mike.
