THE BOY GEDGE DOES WRITE AND RECORD THEM

Where loads of other bands would kill for a song as catchy and radio-friendly as this to release as a 45, The Wedding Present were quite happy to file it away as just another track on an LP:-

mp3 : The Wedding Present - It's For You

Track 8 on the 2005 LP Take Fountain....which incidentally is named after a quote from Bette Davis....

Fountain Avenue is a relatively lesser-known street in LA that sits between and parallel to the more famous and far more congested Sunset and Santa Monica Boluveards.  The chat-show host Johnny Carson once asked Bette Davis on 'the best way an aspiring starlet could get into Hollywood'.  The actress, without hesitation, though one can only guess what was going through her head simply said 'Take Fountain.'

And you all know that I love David Gedge's lyrics, so here we go:-

No, it’s for you
But then you didn’t need me to say that
Cos you already knew
How many times is it today that....
....He’s had to call?
It’s as if you’re still together
I don’t care at all
I’m just wondering whether.....

You think you and he will ever run out
Of things that you have to talk about
You said everything you will ever need so
Why can’t you just let him go

OK I lied,
Sometimes it’s like you never met me
Oh I’ve really tried
But all those in-jokes just upset me

Do you think you and he will ever run out
Of things that you have to talk about
You said everything you will ever need so
Why can’t you just let him go

Just tell him ‘goodbye’
And put down the phone
And for once we can be on our own

You think I’m making this up
But darling it’s true
It just feels as if I’m sharing you

Genius.

I lived right off of Fountain in West Hollywood for 6 months back in 1991. It was always the road lesser traveled and the best way to avoid traffic and all that is really unnecessary about Hollywood.
